Two restaurants side by side — one branded, with a line out the door, and one with a sign that just says RESTAURANT, nearly empty

What is branding? And do I really need it?

You have been doing it since before you had a lease. Nobody gave you the word for it.

The part that gets skipped

Most business owners don’t realize it until they have put everything into a great product. The special brew no one has. The one of a kind recipe from Aunt Sarah. The best smelling coffee everyone you know told you would be a hit.

You did everything right. You invested in the business, you ran the numbers, you created the menu off something you knew would sell. You checked the demographics, you have the best location, you have everything you should have set in place for the business to be successful.

But the business is not going like you planned. People are passing by without stopping, to‑go orders are down, and you know that you have the one of a kind product you believed in when you started this. You run ads, you have specials, but things aren’t going like you expected, and you know if you could just get the product in front of the right person it would be a hit.

“Why is the thing I knew and trusted, the concept I believed in, not out there? I know if they try it they will love it.”

“Where am I going wrong?”

It’s not the product that’s the problem. It’s not location. It’s not the prices or the delivery options. It’s in the branding.

Branding is a word you hear around. When you think of branding you think of shoes, or clothing, or individual products. Something with a logo stamped on it.

But that is one shirt out of a whole wardrobe. Branding is how you leave your mark. It is how your product is seen by the world.

Branding is presentation.

Branding is the mark it makes on society.

You know how it works. You just didn’t call it branding.

Raising anything is the same job. You give it a name. You decide what it wears. You choose where it goes and what it listens to and what gets put into it. None of that is decoration. All of it becomes the version other people meet.

Raising a child
You give her a name.
You choose what she wears.
You decide how she speaks to people.
You pick what she listens to.
You teach her what she does not compromise on.
Raising a place
The name over the door.
The sign, the shirts, the cups, the bags.
The menu, the posts, the voice that answers the phone.
What is playing at four on a Tuesday.
What you send back when it is not right.
And in both, the world decides from all of it at once.

Your place is no different. The sign is what it wears. The menu is how it speaks. The shirts your staff have on are how it carries itself. Somebody who has never eaten your food has already met all of that and made up their mind.

Branding is what gives your place the voice that can yell out: “Hey, I’m right here. Try me.”

Your place needs to be packaged right to deliver the right message.

Branding dresses the place. It packages what you make. It puts a menu in front of them that sells it, and a web design that brings the to‑go orders in. It gets your food seen long before anyone is close enough to smell it.

It makes your place marketable. It makes it noticeable. It lets the world see what you see.

What the research says

90 sec
is all people take to make up their minds about a product or a place — and 62–90% of that judgment comes down to color alone. Singh, Management Decision, 2006
~half
of new establishments are gone inside five years. About a third are still open at ten. US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Business Employment Dynamics

Read those two together and you have what nobody says out loud. The decision gets made in a minute and a half, mostly on how you look — and most places do not reach year five. Not because the food was wrong. Because not enough people ever tried it.

So what is it, in plain terms

It is everything with your place’s name on it, saying the same about your place.

Which in practice means

Every one of those is a first impression you are already making. They either add up to one place, or they do not add up at all.

Good branding, and great branding

There is good branding. Good branding gets you seen. It gets what you make in front of the people who were always going to love it, and it lets them recognize you when they get there.

And there is great branding. Great branding is when someone believes in what you make the way you do. A team that stands behind you and wants to see you succeed as much as you do. Who helps you reach who you want to reach. And who gives your place a voice.

The whole point

Twenty years in the service industry taught me that owners do not need the word. They already understand the idea better than most people who use it for a living — they just call it their place, their name, their baby. And they are right to. Branding is the mark it leaves on everybody who walks past, and you have been building that since day one. It only deserves the same care you gave the lease.

You built something you are proud of. All that is left is for the world to love it the way you already do — and that depends on whether the world can recognize what you made.

Let’s give your place your voice.

Tell us about your place. We’ll tell you straight what is working and what is getting missed.
