I grew up in the 90s. I don’t know if everyone can relate to a time that feels that long ago, but back then, branding was absolutely everything. You had to have name brands from your head down to the logo on your socks.
But your sneakers? They were the top priority.
I remember going on and on to my mom about how badly I wanted a pair of Jordans. She wanted to make me happy, so she went out and bought me a pair. The only problem? They were off-brand.
I walked into my first day of the new school year wearing them, and let me tell you, it was worse than wearing plain, nameless shoes. They were knockoffs. Jeepers. Needless to say, I never wore them again. Back then, the only thing worse than having no brand at all was having a cheap brand clearly copying a legendary one.
Decades later, the exact same thing is happening with AI in branding today.
The “Kmart Jordan” Epidemic in Business
So many new business owners are turning to AI thinking it’s a smart shortcut. They think they are saving money on art, logos, and design by letting a generator do the work.
What they don’t understand is that prestigious, high-class businesses are professionally branded. When a new business pops up with a logo that is clearly AI-generated, people notice. A real artist or a visionary business owner can see right through it.
Using a generic AI logo for your business is exactly like your mom getting you Kmart Jordans and expecting you to wear them on the basketball court with Michael Jordan himself.
A real designer, just like a sneakerhead, knows the details. They know the stitch count, the precision, and the craft. The entire trend of branding was set by human artistry—and AI is just trying to mock it.
The Pulse of the Human Spirit (Why AI Fails)
I live in Charlotte, a beautiful city that revolves around the artsy life. Places like NoDa (North Davidson) and our local art districts are famous for murals and crafts that people make by hand with raw precision and skill.
AI is never going to replace those artists.
Art is not just a clean image or a technical talent. Art is a feeling. It is human emotion.
A true artist creates more than a visually clear image. They bury deep within the design their pain, their suffering, and their ultimate rise to greatness. They find a unique way to combine human emotion and imagery, finding a distinct voice inside complete chaos.
True art is only made by humans who have emotions, who learn how to overcome obstacles, and who struggle through life to make a way. It is inherently human.
Protect Your Legend
Those knockoff shoes I wore on the first day of school were more than just a bad purchase; they were an attempt to replicate a legend. The Jordan brand carries a legacy—not just because of a logo, but because of the literal art Michael Jordan performed on the court through his own struggles and victories. No AI can replicate that.
Art is felt, not just seen. While AI can certainly help us with concepting ideas, it will never be able to draw from that deep place inside where we are all connected as the human race. It cannot paint the images we all universally feel.
AI is limited to the generated ideas a human feeds it for output. But as humans, we are unlimited. We have countless great ideas waiting to leave a unique signature on this earth.
Your business says everything about you. The first impression you give on opening day should never be a pair of knockoff Jordans.
You only get one chance to make a first impression. Be original.
Made a logo in AI? Bring it in.
We will make it yours.
